Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's Disease is one of those things that afflicts the elderly as they get older. People with Alzheimer's suffer memory loss and lapses and as the disease progresses they may need extra care in a home or have a live in nurse. The cause of Alzheimer's is not exactly known, but it seems that certain things can help prevent it such as learning new skills even as you get older.

There are actually several phases to the disease. Memory loss in the beginning stages is often temporary. This amnesia then progresses as the memory loss becomes more and more permanent. Other skills such as cognitive function and decision making decline. In the advanced stages, it can severely impair the person's ability to function in the every day world. That is why outside care is so important and necessary at this stage.

Alzheimer's is also tough on the families, not just on the person who has it. While the person with the disease progresses through the various stages, they can begin to get frustrated at their declining mental state. Some even become violent and lash out at those they love. This is all part of the disease. It is also emotionally tough on the loved ones. It is hard seeing their parent or grandparent or other family member go through the disease and barely remember who everyone is.

There are support groups available for family members and friends of those who have the disease. These can be important because it is comforting to find others who are going through the same or similar things as you are. Support is often necessary, especially to those we require the comfort of others to get them through a tough time. To find Alzheimer's support groups, contact the local hospital or ask around. You can find them on the internet or even ask your loved one's doctor.

Getting the right care is so important for people with Alzheimer's. There are some treatment options but it is important to note that there is no cure at the moment for it. The treatment options are simply ways to prevent the disease from progressing quickly. The inevitable situation is that the disease will eventually worsen. But the right care can prevent the disease from getting worse as soon as it is diagnosed.
